Compiler compatibility

For compiling WHIZARD, you need a Fortran compiler that supports the Fortran 90/95 standard and is able to correctly compile Fortran 90/95 programs (there are also some Fortran 2003 features that might be used in the future). Unfortunately, not all of the currently available compilers meet this requirement.

Here is a list of compilers that have been validated to work with WHIZARD:

• Fujitsu/Lahey Fortran (Intel PC/Linux; version 8.0): http://www.lahey.com
• g95 (free; Intel PC/Linux; version 0.91 Nov 30 2007): http://www.g95.org)
• gfortran (free; Intel PC/Linux; version 4.3.x/4.4.0): http://gcc.gnu.org/fortran/)
• Intel Fortran (Intel PC/Linux, 32 and 64 bit; version 8.x/9.x/10.x/11.x): http://www.intel.com (but see the note below)
• NAG Fortran (Intel PC/Linux; version 5.x): http://www.nag.com
• SUN Fortran (free; Intel PC/Linux; version 8.3): http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/

Compilers that have been reported not to work include:

• PG Fortran (http://www.pgroup.com/ may work, but this has not been tested recently. You need at least a version that supports the Fortran 95 standard.
• Pathscale Fortran.

Note that the performance of the WHIZARD executable varies substantially depending on the system, compiler, and compiler options.

For using the O'Mega matrix element generator (http://theorie.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~ohl/omega/) which is part of the core of WHIZARD, you need the O'Caml programming language (interpreter/compiler). This is available free of charge for most platforms from http://caml.inria.fr/. The Linux distributions of Debian, Mandrake, RedHat, and SuSE have it included.

Note for Intel users: Some edits of Intel Fortran 8.1, notably 8.1.019 to 8.1.021, crash with an internal compiler error. The bug has been fixed in more recent versions.
